About ACSRT

Africa, which has endured the horrors of terrorism, long before other regions of the world are themselves concerned, has diligently worked to find the most appropriate ways and means for preventing and combating this devastating phenomenon of modern times, and adopted in 1999, the Convention of the African Union Organization on the prevention and fight against terrorism. In doing so, our continent has not only accomplished useful work, but it has also been distinguished by the pioneering nature of its commitment.

The African Center for Studies and Research on Terrorism has been established in accordance with the provisions contained in Section H, paragraphs 19 to 21, of the AU action plan for the prevention and fight against terrorism, (Algiers 2002) and following the relevant decisions adopted by the political organs of the Union, which provide for:

The operationalization of the OAU Convention by implementing concrete actions.
The creation of the African Center for Studies and Research on Terrorism / ACSRT.

The inauguration of the African Center for Studies and Research on Terrorism was conducted on 13 October 2004, by HE Abdelaziz Bouteflika, President of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, and Professor Alpha Oumar Konaré Chairperson of the AU Commission African, in the presence of several African Ministers and many personalities representing the African Union partners in the field of prevention and fight against terrorism.

The Center is a structure of the African Union Commission. Its goals are:

Complementing international efforts by strengthening cooperation between African countries to prevent and combat terrorism;
Assisting in the full implementation of international conventions relating to terrorism;
Playing the role of a monitoring and alerting tool by incorporating in its approach the concept of preventive management of situations.
